BOROUGH ESTIMATES’ COMMITTEE
[(To the 'Editor Gisborne Times.] Sir, —In looking over your paper and reading tho acoonnt of tho Council’s special I oommittee meeting in connection with the I estimates, the now Councillors scorn to I havo gone into tho matter in a workmonI like manner. There is, however, one item I that has boon overlooked as well as on proI vions oooasions, and that is, to my mind, I a matter requiring attention, namely, an I amount for an honorarium to our worthy I Mayor. lam well aware that on a proI vious oooasion whon a grant was deoided I Mr Townley himself vetoed it ; but is I should be put on tho estimates and paid, I then he could hand over to oharity or otherwise as he saw fit. Nearly every I ratepayer must be aware of the faot that the ocoupant of the oivio chair has many oalls on him financially as well as on business matters, and it is not fair that ho { should be out of pookot by those transactions. There is also another drawbaok that many gentlemen who would perhaps be eligible for the position of Mayor oould not afford the expense, and we oannot always expeot that Mr Townley, whom it I
would be very hard to improve on in his civio oapaoity will always be returned.—l am, eto., ' ■ Ratepayer,
