FOOTBALL
WEST END v.- HUIA.
The first senior match nnder the control of the Bugby Union was played at the Domain on Saturday between the above clubs. Huia won the toss and West End kicked off with the sun and a slight wind against them, West End kept the ball among their forwards and made the game close. Both teams played on the defen* sive, and the game was mostly confined to midfield. The passing on both sides was weak, and the play when not confined to the forwards wa3 somewhat below the standard of club form. The baoksonboth Bides lacked initiative, and there was no back combination shown daring the match. There was no soore during the first spell. I Wi Friday had hard luok in not scoring I for West End, the ball re-bounding off I him iDto touch in goal. The Huia five- I eights, Bobinson, got within a few yards [ of the West End line, and when a soore I seemed imminent passed weakly, Boderiok I intercepting. Upon resuming after half- I time the West End vanguard made a de- I termined; attack, and were just stopped |
in the niok of time from scoring I on several occasions. Eventually I Brown shot out of a scrum near the | goal line, dived between the Huia half’s I legs as ho stood waiting for the ball, and I crossed the line. He was penalised for I picking up in the scrum, and Bowe kicked I out at the 25 yards’ flag. But the West I End forwards came baok with the ball at 1 their feet, and the Huia backß had a warm | quarter of an hour. Skeet got possession I near the lino and drew first blood. West I End 3, Huia 0. West End still attacked I and Tier finished a good foot rush by soor- I ing. West End 6 points, Huia 0, Huia I rallied, and had much the best of the ( remainder of the spell, pressing West End I closely. There was no further score. For I the victors Brown gave a fine display, and I saved his side repeatedly. He was ably | assisted by Boderiok, Wi Bangi, and Carr. | The forwards all worked well. Brooking I anej. Parker Turei shone out in line play, I and Tier, Wepiho, and Ponoi wore oon- I
spicuous in tho open. For Huia Bowo I and Bobinson had a lot of solid defensive | work to do, and did it well. Tate shaped I well at full-back. Swann and Wauchope I wore the pick of the forwards. Mr W. j McCredie had charge of the whistle, and I gave thorough satisfaction to both players I and spectators, Messrs J. J. Martin and I G. Witty had charge of the line flags. I
