King, coroner, and a jury, of which Mr R, B. Ready was foreman. Sergeant Sheehan represented the police. The inquiry was instituted by the parents of deceased, who stated that they found tho child’s leg and thigh burned by a hot water bottle, applied by one of the probationers and which, it is alleged, had not been properly covered. The child was dying when the mother discovered the burn. Dr Slater, in his evidence, said that he had ordered the deceased’s removal to the hospital, he having previously been in attendance. He considered the case hopeless after the child had been in the hospital a short time. Death did not result from the burn. He described the injury as an accident. The matron and nurses said they could throw no light upon the matter. The father of tho child considered the burn was the result of carelessness. The mother of the deceased deposed that none of the nurses had changed the hot water bottles during her visit there from ton a.m. till three. This was contradicted by one of the nurses. The inquiry was adjourned to afford the jury an opportunity to visit the hospital, ancktake the evidence of eomo of the patientr jU *
