Sydnoy, May 12. Mr Roid, spooking at Grafton, comparing New Zealand and Australia, ascribed the buocobs of the former to the fact, that it was not burdened with large oitiea like Sydnoy and Melbourne. The population was more ovenly distributed. Boforo the Tariff Commission evidence wob given of the possibility of manufacturing alcohol for industrial purposes of the States. Largo quantities of molasses now wastod oould be utilised. Alcohol was invaluable for motive purposes, and could replace gas and korosono as an illuminant.
Melbourne, May 12. There is an epidomia of measles in the city and suburbs. The hospital is overcrowded.
At the inquest on the victim of drinking poisoned beer, the Government analyst deposed that the beer contained cyanide of potassium in poisonous quantity. The inquest was adjourned to enable the police to continue the searoh for the wanted man.

Melbourne, May 12. In the fish cases Lucas’ brother gave evidenoe that Allen told him: “ 1 have done nothing wrong to your brother. If I thought he’d been cheated I would give him £l5O or £2OO, and some more if I win the case.” Witness replied : 11 If you robbed my brother you ought to pay. I will not allow him to take £2OO to go and swoar lies.”
Rome, May 12. Italy has proposed, beyond the ordinary estimates, to spend an additional 5£ millions sterling, spread over soveral years, to considerably increase the navy. Sydnoy, May 12. The steamer Victoria reports having spoken to-day the ketch Bell Flower, from New Zealand, 145 miles east of Sydney Heads, in distress, having lost her rudder. An offer to tow was declined, the captain of the ketch considering the sea too rough. He asked to be reported. Received 12.39 a m., May 13. London, May 13. The report of the Trust Agency Company of Australasia shows the profits for last year to bo £61,477, after paying debentures and preference interest. The interest on capital paid in advance calls absorbs £18,865,' carrying forward £1562.
