EGG-LAYING COMPETITION.

The New Zealand egg-laying competition was formally opened by the Hon. Mr Mills yesterday, in fine weather. The site of the competition is situated three miles east of Blenheim. One hundred pens, white Leghorns are preponderating, silver wyandottss and black; orpingtons being well represented. The result for the

first week was —H. Craber, of Westport, silver wyandottes, 19 eggs, first, being odd better than the Lincoln College’s best pen. The competition is under the supervision j of the Government expert, and the results will be distributed throughout the colony weekly. Mr Hyde, poultry expert, stated I in a speech that the local competition was I the largest .yet held in the world- There I are splendid birds, there being only half a- I dozen unlikely pens.
