In the House of Lords the Arohbishop of Canterbury dealt with the Commission’s report on the natives of Westralia. Lord Tennyson said there was a great wave of indignation throughout Australia owing to the rovelations. Qe concluded by mentioning prospective reforms. The Duke of Marlborough and Lord Spencer rejoiced that steps were being taken to remove the grievance. Lord Lansdowne confessed that he road the report with indignation and humiliation. That such things could.happen under the hag was a mortifying feature, calculated in future to deprive our remonstrances with other powers of a great deal of the force which they had hitherto commanded. He emphasised that the inquiry was due to the colony’s initiative. Sufficient land ought to be reserved for aborigines, and the greatest care taken in the selection of administrators.
. The Law Times says that the dignified and impressive debate can leave no doubt in the minds of Westralian statesmen bb to what is expected of them.. It adds : “ The present display of energy in enforcing the regulation to prevent a recurrence of the irregularities vindicate the State Government’s claim to be regarded as humane and progressive.”
