A specimen of the humors of the Native Land Court was witnessed on Tuesday afternoon. One witness bad been fighting very hard to get his quantum of shares increased, making pleading appeals in turn to the different parties and to the Conrt without avail; then he delivered his final bombshell, which was a threat to appeal. The Court took no notice of this, but went on to give judgment in aooordanoe with what it had alroady indicated, expressing at tho earns time the hope that when the dissentient had had time to consider the matter, he would see that he had been very fairly treated. To everyone’s sur prise ho at onoe got up, said he was not going to appeal, that he was quite satisfied with the deoision, bat that he had been trying what the nativos call “ try fluke ” to get more. He had thrown out his lino, but tho fish had not bitten, and now ho was perfectly content. At the Police Court yesterday morning the two men, Simpson and Delaney, convicted of being illegally on premises at Hauiti, were brought before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., for sentence. His Worship, referring to Simpson, said the prisoner had a bad oriminal record, both in this colony and in Australia. He had no doubt that he went to the store for the purpose of robbing it, as he had done for a small sum, but ho had been disturbed by Hurrey. The prisoner had come to this district a few months ago, and hadhad a chance of living an honest life, bat he had resorted back to his dishonest ways. He had also tried to initiate another man into the same dishonest life. His Worship did not think he would be doing his duty if he only imposed a light penalty. , He sentenced Simpson to 12 months’ imprisonment in Napier gaol, with hard labor. His Worship said the information he had received about Delaney, though not recording a conviction, was that he did not bear a good character. The remarks addressed to the other prisonor applied to him. He was satisfied that had they not been disturbed by Hurrey they would have had the contents of the safe. Prisoner would be convicted, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, with hard labor, in Napier gaol.
