(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The passengers by the s.s- Sonoma, sal* ing for San Francisoo on Friday, include eight Now Zealanders, bound for Zion City. Twenty-throe others travel by the following steamer. It is stated that thirty more Zionists leave tho colony by June, making the total departures for Zion eighty.

Mr R. T. Clarke, secretary of the Nort Island Bacon Company, died this morning. He had been suffering from ear trouble, but apparently was getting better when meningitis supervened. He gradually collapsed. ’ Deceased was conneoted with many publio institutions here. His relatives reside in England. Wellington, last night.
George William Broome, an arohiteot, who pleaded guilty at the Police Court yesterday to three charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences, was sentenced to-day to six months on the main charge and three months on each of the other two charges, tho sentences to be cumulative.
Frank Johnson, found guilty of misappropriating gold belonging to tho Golden Blocks, Limited, Taitapu, was sentenced this afternoon to six months’ imprisonwith hard labor.
Dunedin, last night.Mr A. R. Barclay has definitely deoided to contest Dunedin North seat,
Inveroargill, last night. Harry Earle, aged 20, a well-known rifle shot, met with a serious gun accident at Wendon on Sunday. He was standing with both hands over the barrel, when the gun exploded, blowing a hole through one hand, laoerating the fingers and grazing his chin, nose and temple. One (eye had to be removed.
A young man namod Willian Stuart, a winohman’on the Muddy Greek dredge, was accidentally drowned through slipping off. A verdict of accidentally drowned wa3 returned.
There are 55 patients in Southland Hospital, a record. By a fire at Orepuki a five-roomed house owned by M. Metzger, and occupied by M. Hannan, was destroyed. The house was insured for £l3O in the Allianoe and the furniture for £75 in the South British.
