Tilford and Mr Owen Owen. j At the Police Court yesterday, Paul Tantau, who stated his ago was 14, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to commit a criminal assault on a young Maori girl, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. A ceremony of a pleasing nature wai performed last evening, when Mr C. Hari man was presented with a purse o I sovereigns ny the railway staff of the Gis borne section. In making the presentation Guard Gibb expressed the thorough satisfaction that Mr Harman had invariably given to the department, the public, and those with whom he worked in the Gisborne section, and congratulated him on his promotion. Mr Harman has been transferred from the clerical staff to the Wellington office, and leaves for his new sphere of labor this eveniog. During his oightsen months’ stay here Mr Harman has made himself very popular with those travelling on the railway by his courtesy and his attention to his duties.

There waa a very large assemblage at Holy Trinity Church yesterday to witness the marriage of Miss Lena Bennett, second daughter of the late Mr 0. JD. Bennett, and Mr J. R. Murphy, second Bon of Mr E. Murphy, of Te Arai. The Rev. Dnw- I 1 son Thomas officiated. The • bride was given away by her brother, Mr C. J. The bridegroom’s present to the bride was a handsome diamond ring, and to the bridesmaids gold neeklaceH with pendant. They leave for Auokland this morning, where they join the Sonoma for Amerioa and England. Mr H. D.
