Before leaving the office of < Mayor of Wellington, Mr J.G. W. A'itken, quoted some figures to show the development .that has taken place in Wellington since 1900, the year in which he took office. It; would probably astonish the citizens, he said, when h&told them that the revenue of tho city had nearly doubled in-that time. In 1900 it was ££92,051 18s and on March' 31st last, for the whole city of Wellington, including Melrose, it was d£173,946 12s sd, or, leaving out Melrose, and thus keeping the city on the same lines' that it was on in 1900, ££167,427 7s Bd. - They would thus see that there had been a very great increase io the income of the city, which had, therefore, necessitated a very ; great increase in the amount of work.
