Be Electric Telegraph—Per Press Association—Copyright. Received 11.25 p.m., May 8. . , Sydney, May 8. Mr Carruthers, interviewed on his visit to Queensland, said there was much feeling in some of the sugar oentres against the proposed deportation of kanakas. Many married families lived on their own land, and to deport them amongst savage islanders was, in his opinion, a blot on our civilisation. The story of the kanaka outting uown wages was absurd. They were getting the ruling rates. The recent attempt to reduce them had led to strikes. Strange to say, the places of the kanakas had been filled by whites.
