SCIENTIFIC FARMING
I (Pen Press Association.) I Wellington, last night: The result of experiments with nitrogen I bacilli at the Levin State farm has been very suooessful. Three plots each were sown of beans, peas, clover, aod vetches. I In one of each the seed was inoculated, in tho second the soil was inoculated, and in the third neither seed nor soil Was treated. I In eaoh oase the plot where the seed was I inoculated shows a greater accumulation j of nitrogen nodules than that in which the soil was inoculated, and the latter in turnshows a greater accumulation than the untreated plot. This culture is only useful for leguminous crops. Thejnitrogen stated ! in the nodules of the roots is retainodby the soil when the crop is out, and is available for a succeeding crop which hai” not the power of elaborating cultures for itself. Dr Moore, of Washington, from whom the Government biologist received the cultures, has promised a further supply, so that considerable quantities maybe manufactured for distribution to farmers.
