AN EXPLORER’S FATE.

[(Ben Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. There is every reason to believe that some bones recently found in the Catlins district are the remains of Dr Schmidt, who fifty years ago undertook an expedition from Mataura to Molynßaux through the bush, and disappeared. He was traced by the late W. H. Jenkinson to within 500 or 600 yards of where the bones have been found. Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., has just paid a visit to the district to invest!-

gate matters, and is of the opini on that the remains are those of Dr Schmidt, but nothing was found to settle the point. He is bringing away some of the remains to submit to the authorities. The rest he aud his companion, Mr Fleming, of the Olutha Leader, gathered together, and erected a cairn over- them.
