WELLINGTON. EXOTTING CONTEST.
Wellington, last night. Unusual interest was taken in tho City Mayoral election. There wore six candidates and the voting resulted: —Hon. T. W. Hislop 3055, W. Barbor 2372, J. Devine 1724, J. Luke 1465, W. Wardoll 657, J. Smith 432. - There was a groat orowd in front of tho Now Zealand Times office, where the candidates gave addresses after tho result was known. In fact, there was nearly as rnuoh excitement as on the oooaaion of a Parliamentary eleotion. This is partly due to tho faot that there aro 39 candidates for 15 seals in tho City Oounoil, j including a*' Labour six.” It is not expected the results of tho voting for those can bo known until early in tho morning. I Mr Pearse was elected Mayor of Karon. I Mr was elected Mayor as the I Hutt. V . I
AUCKLAND. Auckland, last night. Very keen interest was taken in the Mayoral election for the city. The candidates were Messrs Arthur Myers, John MoLeod and J. T. Julian, the two lasttamed being members of the retiring jounoil. The running was between Messrs ilyers and MoLeod. It was generally ox>ectod that Myers would win, though JcLeod had a strong following amongst he friendly societies, the temperance arty and the working classes, and his suporters expressed themselves, confident of iotory up till last. The result was a viesry for Myers by a majority of 1652, he tceiving 5198 votes, ns against 8541 for McLeod. Julian secured 627 votes. Myers is a native of Ballarat, but has spent practically his whole life in Auckland. He is 38 year 3of age. Kor the 12 seats on the City Council there are 24 candidates, and the results will not be known till after midnight.
THAMES. Thames, last night. In the Mayoral election Mr Archibald Burns defeated Mr Prank Trembath, the last occupant, by 497 votes to 425. Great interest was taken in the Mayoral and municipal election.
DUNEDIN. , Dunedin, last night. V The municipal elections in the city and suburbs excited a fair amount of interest. In the city, as there was no polling for Mayor, the voting was not so heavy as it otherwise would have been. The result is an infusion of new blood. In the south ward Crs Gore and Orust were re-elected, but Mr Milnes replaces Dr McDonald. In the Belt ward the three retiring councillors, Crs - Burnett, Scott, and Brinsley, were re-elected. In Leith ward Cr Lawrence was re-alocted, the other two being Mrs J. S. Mall and Dr Riley. For Caversham Messrs Wilson (ex-Mayor), Cole, and Rutherford were elected. In South Dnnedin ward Mr T. Fiddis heads the poll, Messrs Harrison and B. Shackloek (Mayor) being the other councillors. For the Roslyn Mayoralty Mr A. Washer was elected, and some councillors who had long in service, including Mr A. C. Begg, were defeated. For West Harbor Mr D. Larnaoh was elected Mayor. For Mornington Mr Henderson, a councillor, defeased Mr J. P. Simon, the retiring Mayor.
Palmerston North, laßt night. Intense interest was manifested at the Mayoral elections. The results were: Maurice Cohen 852, and Henry Haydon 720. / Hawera, last night. The results for the Mayoralty were : B. C. Robbins (re elected) 274, J. Moaneny 168. Waihi, last night. The Mayoralty election resulted: — Thomas Gilmour re-elected by a majority of 369.
