DISASTER IN MINE.
(Per R.M.S. Sonoma,, ah Auckland. 3 Benton (Illinois), April 3. Nearly 50 miners were entombed in Joseph Leiter’s mine at Zeigler by a terrific explosion of gas. It is probable 30 or 40 of the buried men are dead. Thus far four bodies have been found. The explosion was due to the fact that the Leiter mines are not worked on Sundays, thus allowing the gas to accumulate in the lower workings. When between 35 and 45 miners had descended into the mine to-day to resume work a terrific explosion blew the timbers about the mouth of the mine high into tho air. One of the steel 1 cages was blown to the surface from the bottom of the 500 ft shaft. The shock of tbo explosion was felt at Benton, 12 miles distant, One miner was killed and four wore severely injured at tbs mouth of the slfaft in which the explosion occurred. I The number of dead is estimated at 34, { and wounded at eight. I
