AXEMEN’S CARNIVAL. Per Press Association. Invoicargill, Saturday. At the Axemen’s Carnival G. A. Gould, Tasmania, won the single-handed sawing championship ; P, Baird, Manuwatu, won tho maidon chop in 145 3-5 sees., 18in log. Carson and Mclntosh won their heat in double sowing fromascratcb. A serious accident happened to Brighton, a competitor in a oycliDg event. He fell on his head and face and is fearfully cut “u On6 V ' HIB tor, g Qß ia nearly bitten through, and he is in a bad way. The I weather was fair. About 2500 were present.
Invercargill, Saturday. At the Axemen’s Carnival tho Union Handicap, 135yds, was won by L. C. MaoLachlaD, witn 2yds start. Hanna, 15£-yds was second and, Howarth, 154yds, third. The time was 12 l-saecs. In 'the 220yds Fisher, 15yds, was first; Howarth, 22ydr, 2nd ; MaoLacblan, scr, 2rd. Time, 21 4-5 secs.
Brighton, injured in the cycle race,is not so badly hurt as at fir»t reported. The supposed cutting of his tongue was really a piece of chewing gum whioh he had in his mouth, and in the midst of his wounds was taken for a piece of toDgue. The weather is fair, but dull.
