POVERTY BAY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

AUTUMN SHOW,

There was a large gathering at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening, on the occasion of the autumn show held under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society. The conditions in regard to weather were most unfavorable, and considerably militated against a good display of autumn blooms, but, nevertheless, the best was done by the few enthusiasts of the society. Chief among the exhibits was the fine display of chrysanthemums made by Mr A. F. Kennedy, the' blooms including some fine specimens of Lord Ludlaw, Duchess of Fife, Good Gracious, and other •varieties. Mr G. Bull had a good show of dahlias, which were greatly admired, and Mr A. Thomson was as usual to the fore in regard to pot plants. Mrs Murphy exhibited some choice cactus dahlias, and Mr F. Tansley a few fine pot plants. The arrangements made for the exhibition were all that could be desired, and reflected great credit upon the secretary, Mr G. T. Bull. A number of excellent musical selections ■ were rendered during the evening, and aleo several recitations. Songs' were given by Messrs Buckeridge, Barlow and Mitchell, with Mr Gittos preeiding at the piano. Miss Harrison met with a splendid reception in the recitation, “ My Lady’s Leap,” and in response to an encore gave' ‘‘ Specially Jim.” Mr Rice Recited “ The Actor’s Story” in a manner that won for him the hearty plaudits of all present; During the evening the Rice Dramatic Coy. gave a clever farcial comedy entitled “Leave.it to Me,”, which was much appreciated. The several characters were represented by Mr and' Mrs Rice, Miss Rice, and Meeßrs Holdsworth and Sandlant.
