ROWING.

THE SENIOR CREWS.

(BY “ OuTKIGGEE.”) There was a large orowd to witness the annual fixture between the Gisborne and Poverty Bay Rowing Club's senior fouroared crews, which was rowed over the two-mile course on the Taruheru on Saturday afternoon. The. race between the youths’ crews on Friday night caused the supporters of the clubs and others to roll up to see the . race. between the two seniors, and they were rewarded .by witnessing one of the best two sheds that has been seen for years. The Gisborne crew, owing to adverse cumstances, had to change its crew lately, and . they were not fit, otherwise they would have had a say in tbe final deeision. Mr C. Taylor despatched the crews to a good start, and the Gisborne crew, palling with more dash, soon had a lead of about a length. This they increased, and passing the hospital they were 11- lengths to the good; but the Poverty Bay stroke was not to be shaken off so easily. Rowing with a good swing, his men responded, and at the bridge the lead was reduced by a length. The boats were level at the bend, and ooming into sight the result still in donbt ; but the Blues got a slight"'} lead. Donkin, however, was not to be I denied, and called on bis men for another effort, which was responded to, and they came to tbe front. But the crew were now done, and their effort not being sustained Keilet came away ami won by about three-quarters of a length in the good time of 12.16, amidst much cheering from their supporters. Mr J. Webb acted as judge,

JUNIOR RACE. Immediately after the senior race the i junior crews left the shed, and .both crews ' were confident of success* and another : Homeric contest was witnessed. Never has a bottter finish been seen in any le iativo fixture, and for the last twohunfe i dr. i yards the race in doubt, tho t ‘ i 'alternate stroke putting the crew ahead, “ Won by inchos” was tho verdict. The Qiaborne orew were'-the quickest away and soon had a load of a length. At tho Hospital the Blues had it reduced to about half a length at tho bridge, when they struck tho piles of tho bridge going through, allowing their opponents to increaso thoir lead by over a length again. Tho Gisborne men, pulling well, still held their own to the gasworks, whon Poolo made his effort, and at Barton’s corner the boats were level again. The Gisborne stroke once again put a spurt on, and led by a quarter of a length. Both crews were now doing thoir utmost, the barraokors on both sides cheering their crews on, and although Poole got about two feotin front he could not maintain tho advantage, Johnston coming again in the last two strokes, and winning on the post. The jndge, Mr Webb, had a dose finish to decide. TEN STONE'CREWS. To-night shortly after five tho 10 stone crews moot, and another good race should evontuate. Tho Poverty Bay crew being altored since Saturday the Gisborno orew should win Tho stroke, W, Hackott, is a old rower, and is in groat form. Tho 8 man, A. Poole, is also in good nick, and is a good oarsman. Tho 2 man is woll and fit, and should fight out a great finish. The bow is also in good form, and is a great stayer. A word about the cox; he is rather heavy for the crow to pull along, I e the Gisborno crew are in great form.
