Wellington, last night. An interesting point was decided by Mr Justice .Cooper to-day ' in reference to the goodwill of licensed hotels. The estate of the late Jacob’ Joseph included two hotels, the National and Star' and Garter. The former was valued at £2835 and the latter at £6070. In addition to those capital values the Commissioner of Stamps claimed duty on goodwill of the hotels, assessed at £7OOO ana £6OOO. The executors of the estate disputed the right to assess goodwill, but Mr Justice “Cooper held that the goodwill was part of the value of tho estate, and lianlo to duty. In the ease of the Star and Garter the goodwill of the hotel was much greater than the capital value of the land and buildings., James Wilson, ,ah ox-man-o’-warsman, was this morning sentenced to two years* imprisonment for breaking and entering and theft at Westport. Ultimately a motion was carried to oommunicate with kindred associations in the colony, -asking their opinions as to. the! advisability, of-the proposed exhibition being of a purely character or international.
