Christchurch, last night. Tho owners of the Riccarton Bush, all that remains of the forest which once existed in the vicinity of this city,, have agreed upon the conditions upon which they are prepared to dispose of it for a public reserve. The bush, which is in a natural state, and covers fifteen acres, is within three miles of tbc city. Mr C. M. Gray has been nominated for the mayoralty.

Joseph Haydon, a one time large sheepfarmer in Canterbury, has given JE2OO and interest for one year (£8) to the Canterbury Coilego to provide for two echolarships in chemistry and physics, and a similar amount to the Canterbury A. and P. Association for obtaining books or cortifieates to winners of the associatiqu-’a - competition for young farmers. Mrs Haydon leave by the Tongariro for the Argentine en route for England. : S

Dunedin, last night. A blind man named Charles Gray, residing in Stafford Avenue, was found to-night hanging on a, verandah post at his house. He was out down aud taken to the hospital, where he is recovering. At Naseby to-day Enoch Jopson' was fined £2 for unlawfully taking trout with* out a license, acoused pleading gailty. A similar charge against Robert Horswell was dismissed, the Magistrate being doubtful whether the Act applied to private dams. Daring the late dry weather the -C water in various dams getting low, large numbers of trout were captured. In the case of Horswell he had let the water away aud secured the fish, and then, on speaking to the owoer of the dam, ho had been given permission to take a fish or vi two.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day a man ■ named Androws, aged 70, pleaded guilty >. to making a false declaration as to his earnings so as to obtain the old age -pen* sion, which he was not entitled to. He had beon earning 303 a week regularly as -- a crossing keeper. His excuses were that ho had a family to keep and he did not know it was so serious an offence, and bis ■' wife put him up to it. He was ordered to \- come up for sentence when called mpon.'Vii* and his pension was cancelled. " . Nelson, last night, The warship Challenger left this evening for Picton. “ Chinese premises in the city and suburbs s have recently been.raided, opium smoking being suspectod. It is said that pipes, etc., were found on two separate premises, and vone Chinamen in a half stupid state from > the effects of the drug. The Druids recently ereoted a fine balk which was opened to night.
