Admiral Diebogatofi hailed a steamer, whioh reports to Penang that 27 warships, presumably Japanese,were sighted 79 miles south-west of Penang. Lloyd’s agenoy reports that the Russian fleet passed Singapore on Saturday afternoon, apparently heading for the Darien Straits. The British steamer Taro, which has reached Singapore, reports having sighted 47 Russian ships ISO miles north of Singapore. Two other steamers which have arrived at Penang report having sighted a large Russian fleet in the straits of Malacoa, ineluding 25 transports, Bteering towards Singapore. Another steamer reports sighting twelve cruisers, presumably Japanese, some distance ahead of-the Russians, They are supposed to be scouting. 4 There is great excitement at Penang and Singapore. The British battleship Oeean, the cruiser Sutdej, and another cruiser at Hong Eong, have been ordered to Singapore immediately.
