“ Devonian ” writes to the Auckland Herald:—Sir, —A recent issue of your excellent paper refers to a report of a subcommittee of tho Farmers’ Union at Gisborne as to the best methods of destroying ragwort and thistle. I was much amused at the remedies suggested. I have had no little experience with troublesome weeds when in America, where I spent 18 years, not. only with weeds, but with a bush known as sassafras, than whioh there is not a more persistent growth known. A small portion will soon produce a vigorous bush; again, out one sprout deep down in the soil, and six will take its place in defiance of tho catting and still prosper. A neighbor had a field of several sores covered with this pest. He had tried many suggested remedies, yet it grew. In the hot month of August he attaoked this growth with a bush scythe, when the plants were in full bloom and plenty of sap. He did this tho seoond time, and today be-has a clean pasture, and not a sassafras bush to be found. I write what I have seen. I should add that such

results can only bo oxpected by catting during the hottest weather of August. Post oak runners also can be destroyed in the same way, bnt a third cutting is necessary. Try the above for ragwort.

A ceremony of a pleasing nature took plaee on Saturday afternoon, when the members of the Gißborne Reohabite Tent took tho opportunity of making a presentaI tion to Bro. S. Graham prior to hia departure for Napier. The presentation, whieh took the form of a handsomely framed Fast Chief Ruler’s certificate, was made by the Chief Ruler of the Tent, Bro. T. A. Holdsworth, who referred to tho excellent services rendered by Bro. Graham to the Tent during his tonare of office. Though they regretted his departure, they were pleased to learn it was to his advancement. Their loss was Napier’s gain, and be hoped that, though absent, Bro. Graham would ever remain a member of the Gisborne Tent. Bro. J. Peokover, treasurer, spoke in a similar strain, and added that Bro. Graham’s departure would be felt by other societies with which ho was connected. 'Bro. Graham made a feeling

reply, thanking the brethren for the gift, which he thought all Beohabites should aspire to attain ; he hoped ever to remain faithful to tbe principles of Rechabitism. Mr Graham, who has been a member of the staff of Messrs Common, Shelton, and Co., left for Napier last evening, having accepted a position with the firm of Henry Williams and Sons.
