.(Per Press Association.) Napier, last night. A sharp shock of earthquake w«3 felt at three minutes to ten this morning. The warship Challenger arrived hero last night. The Mayor, Councillors and representatives of other local bodies paid an official visit this morning,' and oxtended a welcomo to the officers and crew. The Challenger remains two days, and will be thrown open for public inspection. • Christchurch, last night. At a meeting of the directors of tho Reeves Proprietary Gold Dredging Company yesterday, Mr Scott, . dredgemaster, reported that the prospects had never been better, and ho had reason to believe that recent returns would be maintained. The secretary stated that the credit balance msw in baud was £485, after provision had been made.for all known liabilities except debentures and interest due in June next. Master Alix was scratched for the Great Easter Handicap at 11.80 this morning.
Dunedin, last night. Mr Faii-bairn, town clerk of Dunedin, has resigued. Id the licensing prosecutions the charge against Elizabeth Gleeson of sly grogselling was dismissed.. George Ncblj, for taking liquor into a prohibited district, -Port Chalmers, for the purpose of sale, was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment without hard labor. John Scott, charged with committing a technical broach of the Act by consigning liquor, into tho same district without giving the name of tho person, for. whom it was intonded, was lined 5s and costs. \
