the Political Labor League. The meeting was tumultuous at times. Mr Rigg denied that he wanted to woaken tbe Liberal party. At the close 40 members enrolled and an executive was formed.
NAPIER, last night. A branch-of tbo Navy League was formed here on Saturday evening. Two well-known characters, Patrick Carroll and Hugh McLean, were before the Court to-day charged with assaulting an old man named Peter Hargreaves and stealing his watch. The assault took placo in the principal street of tbe town on Saturday afternoon, Hargreaves being set upon without the least provocation and badly knocked about. Accused wore roi mended for a week, Hargreaves being unable to appear.
Thomas Peddle, sheep-farmer, was fined .£2O and costs for failing to take proper steps to clear his property of rabbits. Guthrie-Smith was fiued £4 and costs for exposing lice-infoctod sheep for sale. Counsel referred to the lutter as a particularly bad case.

Acting under medical advice, Mr J. G Stoveus has withdrawn from the oontesl for Wellington seat.
In the Court of Appeal argument was I resumed in the ease of the Hutt County Council versus Crawford and others. Mr DalzielJ, for respondents, contended that the Council had never approached con- I sideration of the expenditure required in the county from a riding point of view, I and that the modern custom of ridmg I finance was different from the system of I county finance, which was proper under the repealed Counties Act, 1876. NELSON, last night. Injurious bush fires occurred in the I Trass Valley on Thursday, and caused considerable loss of fences and grass, some I sheep, timber, etc. One whare was destroyed. The fire is still raging, and yesterday was threatening Bryant’s sawmill and a pretty bridge in the valley. A strong southerly wind fanning the flames rendered it difficult to cope with the fire.
