REPUTED THIEVES’ DEN
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. At the Magistrate’s Couct to day Henry Peacock was charged with being the occu pier of premises frequented by reputed thieves. Defendant kept a billiard saloon in Manners street, for which he held a license. Members of the doteotive force gave evidence that the room was the resort of all the housebreakers and thieves in the city. Defendant had been warned of the characters of his patrons, but the piaoe grew worso instead of better. For the defence counsel contended that the knowledge that the persons were reputed thieveß muat be proved on the part of the occupier. , The police contended that the fact of holding a license throw upon dofendaht the responsibility o£ taking reasonable precautions to prevent criminals continually hanging about,his room. The Magistrate said he would give his decision on Monday. - ' , .
