(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night.

A fire at Mercury Bay destroyed a house owned by L. D. Nathan and .Go., and occupied by H. Steedman. It was insured in the Norwich Union for £4OO. Dannevirke, last night.

A gale last night fanned smouldering fires in the bush westward of the town. Several settlers had an anxious time, being up all night protecting'their homes. News from Matanau states that fivo families at Tamman’s mill were burnt out, losing everything. The damage is unknown. The wind has abated somewhat, but is still blowing strong.
