The Chairman said that there would not be much need of the proposed road if they got the railway up in a reasonable time. The matter was referred back to the petitioners. The funeral of the late Mrs Albert Williams will- leave her late residence, Haiti, at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Brethren of the Star of Gisbarne Lodge are requested to meet at the house of Bro. Williams for the purpose of attending the funeral. Numerous flags in town were flying at half-mast yesterday as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased lady. Mr G-. Norton, the racing boat builder* of. Wellington, has telegraphed to Mr ASawyer, assistant secretary of the Poverty Bay Bowing Club, that he can within a fortnight complete and' ship a four-oar clinker outrigger Bimilar to the one supplied last year to the Union Club Bowing (Napier). A rather important matter engaged the attention of the Native Land Court yesterday, when an application was made for confirmation of a contract for sale by the late Heta te Kani, of Haiti 314, containing ninety acres, for £2OOO. The matter had been before the Supremo Court on other grounds. Mr Sievwright and Mr W. L. Bees appeared in support of the application, and Mr Stock and Mr E. J. Chrisp' for the opposition. The. question was raised as to whether £2OOO was sufficient consideration, and evidence was given to show the value, estimates ranging from £25 to £4O per acre. Messrs Grant, Matthews, Bright, Quigley, Bobinson (Town Clerk), C. F. Lewis. (District Valuer), J. Coleman, H. Wilson, and Captain Chrisp were examined as to value,and other witnesses were Messrs S. John Erickson, on a third charge of drunkennoss, was fined and costs, and for resisting the police £2 and costs.
An application will bo bofore the Holiday Committee this morning from the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, asking that in view of the Poverty Bay-Hawke’s Bay representative criokot rnatoh on Monday and Tuesday, tho 27th and 28th inßt., that the latter dato be appointed for the weekly half-holiday instead of Thursday.
The long-promised visit of the Bluff Hill Bowling Club to Gisborne takes place on Saturday next. Tho Bluff Hill Club is sending throe teams to Gisborne. The skips to represent tho Gisborne Bowling Club will bo picked to-duy. On Thursday next the handicap fours will be gone on with, fuller particulars of which will appear to-morrow morning.
