RICE DRAMATIC COMPARY.
“ UNCLE TOM’S CABIN.”
There was a very large audience at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening, when the Riee Dramatic Company produced the new version of “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The production wbb acknowledged to he the finest given by the company, everyone being delighted, and there beiog intense enthusiasm throughout. The part of Topsy was splendidly taken by Miss Rachel Rico, whose acting, dancing, and singing were all first class. Mr T. A. Holdsworth gave a strong representation" of the character of Uncle Tom, The part of Simon Degree was acted in forcible style by Mr A. Rice. A very sweet representation of Eva was given by little Miss Ivy Robertson, whose fair curls, angelic expression, and winning ways charmed everyone. It was undoubtedly the best pourtrayal of that part that has ever been given in Gisborne. The death of little Eva and translation scono was beautiful, and very impressive. The part of Miss Ophelia was very finely, taken by Miss Esther Dalroy,. while Miss Ray Nelson, as Eliza Harris, was exceptionally good, and her singing of plantation melodies was greatly appreciated. Marks was in the excellent hands of Mr R. H. Clark. Mr J. Robb as the father of little" Eva had a trying part, which he acted in a very able manner, giving full effect to the strong pathetic Boenes. Dittle Harry was entrusted to a bright littlo curlyheaded boy, Master Phil. Mr T. Sandlant made a name for himself as St. Clair. The other parts, all being well taken, were allotted as follows • Haley, Mr K. Smith; Mr Shelby, Mr William Ealkner; Mr Wilson, Mr E. Newton; George Harris, Mr J. Robb - Van Thromp, Mr R. George ; Sambo, Mr* Den Tait; Jumbo, Master Alfred Rice • Auctioneer, Mr A. Sawyer: Andy, Mr C.' Tait; George Selby, Syd. Tait; JacksoD," Mr W. JJames; Pompey, Mr W. C. Par-' ker; Jake, Mr T. F. Walsh; Aunt Chloe, Miss A. jPafcterson : Cassy, Miss Fanny Rogers j'Emmaline, Miss Flossie Sawyer; Lucy, Miss' A. Jones; Mrs Shelby, Miss Annie Monteith.
The sceaery was a revelation and was very warmlj applauded. The plantation scenes and frozen river were painted bv Mr Cattail. Mr K. H. Clark had the arrangement d the mechanical effects and visions. The (orchestral and incidental music was arringed by Mr Gittos. The Company era ttbo warmly Congratulated on their great e&coee.
