DISASTROUS FIRES

GEE AT DAMAGE UP NOBTH.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The Waikiekie district is being devastated by disastrous fires. Hundreds of acies of much needed feed end star.diDg; bush have been swept by fires. Some settlers had pracdeally a 1! their feed burned, and there are the gloomiest of prospects ahdad. No feed means no milk, and in consequence of fire'and drought combined the Jooal factory may have id close down.

The heaviest losers are Jas,. Hartnell (who has lost practically all his feed), Berridge and Sons (who have had some hundreds of acres of feed burned), and Stephens and Sons. The settlers have been fighting day and night to try and keep the fire in check, and as there is no prospect 1 of. rain their task seems hopeless.
