The weather wan dull and cold for the first day • of the athletic championship meeting, and thq attendance at Lancaster Park was only moderate. The fibree-milo walk resulted : Boss (Wellington) 1, Stubberfield (Canterbury) 2, Lopdall (Canter- - bury) 8. The only ones to finish. Won by 40yds. , Time 28 17 1.5. j Long Jump—Kosengrave, 19ft'2in, 1 ; Craig, 19ft o£ic, 2; Francis, 18ft 7£in, 3. One hundred yards : —lst beat, Hartland v 1, Williams 2; time 10 2-ssecs. Second heat: Doffey 1, O’Kaue 2 ; won easily ; time lOsecs. Third heat: Subbs 1, Widmer 2 ; won by a foot; time 10 3 ssecs. Three Mile Bioyole Championship— Beynolds (Auckland) I,Oates (Wellington) 2, Falconer (Canterbury) 3 ; the only competitors ; won by two lengths; time 8.11 1-5.
Quarter-mile Championship Widmer (New South Wales) 1, Pollock (Wellington) 2, Hoare (Otago) 3, Williams (Wellington) 4 ; a great finish ; won by a yard ; time 5.2 3 : sseos.
The points for the shield are—Welling-ton-16, Canterbury 11, Otago 3.'
WELLINGTON LEADS FOB BANNEB.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. There was a good attendance at.Lanoastsr Park for the Championship meeting, although the day was cold and overcast. The visitiDg athletes all showed good form. Shrabb won the three mile /event with ease, and Dailey ran bis heat of the 100yds championship, pulling up in 10 seconds dead, and appears to have the final at his mercy to-morrow. In the 75yds handicap ha was second in bis heat, conceding 9 yards to the winner. He won the semifinal throngh beating the Btarier, but could not get up in the final. Warner (New South Wales) only appropriated the 440yds championship, after a great struggle with Pollock. The following are additional events:— V'

In the handicap events Orbell won the High Jump, Fraser.the 75 Yards Flat and 220 Yards Flat, Martin the Half-mile, and Murray the Mile.
