ST. PATRICK'S SPORTS.

The annual athletic meeting of the St. Patrick’s Sports Society was held at° the picturesque Park Company/s grounds, To Hapara, yesterday, This gathering is the ' -chief athletic event of the year, ap'd under the management of an’ able and. enthusiastic committee, is becoming more popular each succeeding meeting. The. amount of- prize-money Was considerably, increased this year, Which accounted for the largo num her of entries received in the vari- ■ ous events. .The day: was fee, with a refreshing southerly, breeze blowing up.the course, which was not I conducive to record-breaking. .There was a large attendance of the p.uiblie —women and children being in a large majority* The secretaries, Messrs J, H>. Martin, and Eld. Williams, assisted by, a strong committee, had the arrangements lot the sports, in perfect order, and everything passed off happily.; Mr. P. Mailer had the children under his I special care, and distributed a large number, of prizes during the aftcrI noon. Mr. J. Somervell superintended the merry-go-round, which I kept going merrily, all the day. Mr C. F. Lewis acted as starter of the foot events, and Mr E. Deveryi of the horse events. The judging in the foot events was conducted by; His Honor J.udgo Jones, and Mr J.. O. Nisbett* The judges in the horse events were Messrs E. Cusson, J. A. Harding, G. R. Wyllie, and George Eliott. The time-keepers were Messrs W. Fraser and G. Watson. Mr J* E. Whitby was clerk of the scales, and Mr Pritchard clerk of the Course. Others who worked hard to promote the success of the sports were Messrs W. .Howard, WWebb, Tg Hjackett, H. M. Porter* J. Griffen, C. Neenan, G. Gratz, M. O’Connor, T... Wjall, and W. Mahoney. - The City. Band, under. Bandmaster ‘J. Chrisp, were in attendance, and enlivened the prbccedilngs. The Rev. Father ‘ Mullvihill,| President of the Society, assisted during the day. The catering was in the hands of Mrs Erskiue, who gave every satisfaction.
