At noon yesterday an alarm of fire was given,' and the Eire Brigade promptly turned out. The fire was at the residence of Mr W. Good, in Childers road, but fortunately little damage was done. The overheating of a stove caased the mantelpiece to ignite, but the fire was discovered I in good time ahd suppressed.

Three Chinese, members of the crew of the steamer Australian, were charged at the Water Police Court, Sydney, with having, in company, smuggled 30 tins of opium, valued at £4O. One of the accused admitted his guilt, but the two others protested their innocence. The Bench oonvicted the trio, each being fined £l2O, in i default six months' imprisonment.

Yesterday morning a heavily loaded, waggon, which drew in to the side of Peel • street to receive a quantity of furniture j from Mr J. Townley’s, got stuck in a deep rat and remained in that position for I about two hours. The portion of the road I had recently been dug up to allow gas I I mains to bo laid, and two wheels of the I I waggons went nearly down to the axles in I I the soft sand. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the following cases :— W. Pettis and 00. (Mr Arthur Coleman) v. William Olive and Margaret Adamson, claim £ll 3s sd, costs £1 Os 6d ; James Davies (Mr E. J. Cbrisp) v. Mary Donald, claim £4 3s, costs 17s. An application to take evidence in the case of Charles Smith (Mr Cbrisp) v. David Pretty (Mr Arthur Coleman), a claim of £25 12s for money lent and rent due, was heard. Evidence in support of his claim was given by plaintiff. Messrs R. Johnstone and V. Pyke, J.’eP., presided.

The annual picnic of the Matawbero Presbyterian Church Choir was held in Mr Pioken’s paddock, Patutahi Valley, yesterday. About 50 peoplo were present and a very enjoyable time was spent. The usual games wore indulged in, and the picnickers returned to their homes delighted with their day’s outing. Mr Parker thanked Mr'Pickon for the use of his paddock, and tho latter in roplyiog placed his ground at the disposal of tho choir whenever they required it,for similar functions, -
