Auckland, last night. The Ventuva brongbt 20 elk, 24 blacktoil, 5 Virginia deer, 50 geese, 5 raooons, 5 owls, 2 Brent geese, 2 snow geeße, 2 white breeder geese, 20 pintail duoks, 10 wood ducks, 5 widgeons and one pair of oanvasbacls ducks—all in splendid condition—to be liberated in various parts of the colony. Owing t-o heavy weather on the voyage two elk, five deer and throe goese died. Rotorua, last night. The Newspaper-Proprietary Association has just concluded a long and important meeting here. Most of the leading papers of the colony, including all those in tho four chief towns, were represented. Mr J. O. WilkiD, of the Lyttelton Times, was re-elected president, Mr/G. Fenwick (of tho Otago Daily Times) vice-president and Mr F. Hyman (of Christohuroh) secretary.
Wanganui, last night. In the Magistrate’s Oourt this morning a settler named Low was fined and costa for failing to clear land of blackberries. Defendant, who is a lessee, pleaded that a eovenant in bis leaso provided that the owner Bhould keep the land olenr of noxious weeds, but as the Act makes tho ocoupier liable the magistrate nfiicted a fine.

The Fire Brigade team wore welcomed home from, the Dunedin, demonstration last night, Regarding .the disqualification in the disabled hose event,, the secretary, (Mr Robbins), stated that the telegraphed information .was wrong. Hawera and . Masterton . tied, and in the nujn-ofi! SH'awera won. it was alter the tie was decided that the protest against •the original runpiing was dodged. As, to the protest against the disiqualiification being disallowed, the protest- was never considered, and no opportunity; given Hawera ito -‘tender evidence. Legal advice is being •taken.

The Land Board held an important land ballot this morning, when 4600 acres in South Westland and ICaiterangi- districts were offered for lease in perpetuity under the Bu,sh and Swamp Lands Act. Seventeen sections drew 312 applicants,, the scene of the ballot being a busy one, . settlers showing every desire to / avail themselves of the land offering.
