The functions always one of the most enjoyable held m Gisborne during the year, and the arrangements for this e vening’s gathering aro‘of a most complete kind. There should be a crowded attendance. Forty-nine elk and deer from tho United States arrived by the mail steamer Yen tura from San Francisco. The elk will bo liberated in the southern part of the South Island, and the deer will be distributed in various parts of the colony. The animals came out in charge of Mr Moorhouse, of the Government Tourist Department. A young pig swam through the breakers and landed on the Waikanae beaoh, Lowe street end, yesterday afternoon. Where it came from was a mystery; it had evidently heen carried to sea by tho fresh and then got on to the beaoh. As it landed it was met by a number of dogs, who regarded it with ouriosity. A large number of Gisborne people leave for Tolago Bay to-day to attend the annual race meeting there on St. Patrick’s Day. The Tolago Bay Jockey Club’s meeting has become a very interesting and popular gathering on the Coast, and the present meeting promises to surpass all previous meetings, both in regard to the attendanee and the nature of the sport. At the Police Court yesterday morning two first offenders for drunkenness, Maori and Pakeha, were cautioned and discharged on payment of,' oab hire. An elderly man named John Young was charged with drunkenness, tho fourth offence within sis months. He was also charged with being an habitual drunkard. He was fined 10s and the costs on the first charge, and was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment- for tho- seoond. As those - generally took place in proximity to public houses, tho difficulty ia detection should not be so great as in places not so lighted up. Sergeant McKenzie said the matter was receiving, attention. The local foroo was handicapped through being shorthanded.

There was a largo crowd at the wharf I last evening to say good-bye to Mr A W Adair, lately of the firm of Messrs Wilhams and Kettle, who left by tho Zealandia lor Wellington, whore he joins tho Star of Ireland for London, at which place he joins his brother in business. Prior to his | departure Mr Adair wa3 made ihe recipient of a handsome Kaiapoi travelling rug, the presentation being mado by Mr J. H. Golebourno on behalf of a number of Mr Adair’s friends. The members of the Gisborne Club Orchestra also mado a presentation of a smoker’s companion to their lafce olub male, Mr H. Maude making the presentation. Mr Adair has made a large circle of friends, who will wish him every I success in his new sphere of life. -
