I • In tho Supreme Court John Archibald j and Hamilton Sinclair, former omployes in tho United Fortners' Co-operative Association, were sentenced to nine " months’ imprisonment for the embezzlement of moneys belonging to tho Association, -the defalcations extondod over two months, aud amountod to a considerable sutn in each .instance.
Wellington, last night, lbo latest information from tho hospital is that Mr Goorge-Fishor’s condition is vory low.
The State school at K&ikoura was totally destroyed by fire at 9 o’clock last night. It was valuod at £I2OO. The insurance is unknown. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
I - Dunedin, last night. I ? voral -deputations waited on the I Minister of Mineß and disoussed the leakage of gold on dredges, asking that buyers be hocused, and that steps bo taken to ar--1 rest the dostruotion of agricultural laud by dredging .The Minister, while opposed to valuable land being used in this manner, considered that poorer land’would rather | benefit by dredging. The University Counoil next asked that tho £750 promised for the Otago School of Mines should be I handed over. The Minister advised that they should approach the Premier, as he held the money. It should come- out of fino technical schools vote. ■
A fire early this morniDg destroyed the dwelling of Mrs Higginson,. Cumberland street.
