MAORI GATHERING.

SPEECH BY GOVERNOR.

Per Press Association. Auckland, last night.

The Governor opened the Maori meeting house at Obinemntu to-day in the. presence of a largo gathering of Maoris and Europeans. The Hon. J. Carroll was also present. The Governor received an enthusiastic welcome, and war dances and poi dances were given. A loyal address was presented, ana his Excellency unveiled a monument to the great ohief Patera te Pukuatua. The Governor made a speech, in which he referred to the King’s deep interest in the people of New Zealand, and to the need’ for the observance by the Maoris of the laws of health, otherwise he said they would rapidly die out.
