March 8. To one of Motu’s lucky men a smoke concert was given on Saturday evening. Mr T. Abberton was one of the persona who drew a section in the Tahora Block at the recent ballot. Mr P. Gallapher presided, .and after the toast of 11 The Sing ” had been duly honored, the Chairman proposed the health of “ Our Guest,” and made fitting remarks as to Mr Abberton’s amiable disposition. He was sorry to see suoh a desirable member of the community take his departure. Mr Abberton would' very shortly be ope of . thoso men whom all colonials honored—a pioneer of the forest. (Applause.) Mr W. J. JReed, in a highly eulogistic speech, endorsed the remarks of tbo Chairman. Mr A. Coward also referred to the loss of Mr Abberton from Motu. The toast of “ The Ladies ” was ably responded to by Mr T. Tyerman. Other toasts were duly honored, including “ The Press.” .

A petition to the Government is being largely signed by} settlers, praying for a bi-weekly mail. The settlers on the Opotiki side .of the river are addressing a circular letter to the Opotiki County Council, asking that their thirds be allowed to accrue in order that they can spend a substantial amount on their newly-mado roads later on. The idea is to keep the money in the district.
