Noble won the toss and decided to bat, Trnmper and; Duff opening the inhiDgs. Callaway opened the bowling to Duff, wfio put the first ball into Sims’ hands at slip. The first test match between Australia and New Zealand commenced at Lancaster Park this afternoon in perfect cricketing weather. The attendance of the public was hardly up to expectations, about 3000 being present, including His Excellency the Governor and party. Sims was chosen captain of the New Zealand team, and Laver, Kelly, and Howell stood bat of the Australian team. The visitors had the first use of the wicket, and that renowned pair, Trumpet and Dnff, opened,'bat a sensational start 1 was made, Duff being caught first ball off Callaway. The association of Trnmper and Hill quickly pnt a different aspect on affairs, and before a separation was effected they had given a solid start to the innings, j and the average of run-getting per wicket was thereafter well maintained. Trumper I gave one chance to Boxshall when in the thirties, but otherwise his innings was faultless, and characterised by a charming variety of strokes. Hill did not display the aggressiveness of Trnmper, but was especially sound on defence. He batted without a blemish till well in the eighties, when he returned one to Bennett, which was not accepted, and afterwards gave two other chances. His century was the first one of the tonr, and was well deserved, | Noble did not shape at all happily, while Gregory was favored by extreme luok.

The New Zealand, fielding was . lamentably poor, the ground fielding being erratic, while the catchiDg was atroqions, seven ehances out of nine being' dropped. The bowling all ronnd was very steady. The following are tho scores : AUSTRALIA—Ist InniDgs. > R. A. Doff, c Sims, b Callaway ... 0
