DEATH OE MRS SIEV,WRIGHT, .Genaral . regret was expressed in town yes’teruay, morning when the news of the death of Mrs .William
Sievwright was -made known. Deceased had been in, feeble health for, some time past, an,d about a fornight ago was compelled to take to her, bed with a severe internal com-
plaint, lon which an operation performed on Wednesday failed to give relief. Mrs Sievwright is wellknown: throughout New -Zealand, ha. ing been one of the founders of tho National Council of Wpmen, and at the .time ox her death liel-d -the position of President. She took great
interest in the work of tho Council,, and was eagerly looking forward, to the next meeting, for which she was formulating plans. Deceased had been a, resident of Gisborne for upwards of twenty-five years, during Whioh time she has ever been prominent in taking a leading part in I all matters pertaining to the upI'lifting of humanity. She was an able advocate of tho rights of women and a strong supporter of) the prohibition movement, at all times displaying an earnestness and intensity of purpose which won many to heE side. She Was a lady of high 'culture, who nob only based argument on sound logic, but had a most persuasive manner an|d admirable tact. -Mrs Sievwright was for, many years a member of the Waiapu Licensing Committee, and also occupied the position of secretary -of the children’s section of the .Cook Memorial Fufid. The news of her, death will be received with deep regret throughout the colony, but the good work in Which she was over prominent will long be remembered. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr Sievwright and members of the family, in tneir sad bereavement.
’At the meeting of the Co-operat-ive Building Society- last night, Mr L. T. Symes (Chairman of Direcbor«), proposed that a vote' of condolence be passed to 'Mr Sievwright on -the death of Ijis wife. The , Chairman mentioned -that Mr Sievwright was one of the promoters of that Society,, and had always taken great interest in it- The resolution was passed in respectful silence.
