OPIUM SMOKING.

(Per- Faess Association.) Invercargill, last night.

In Magistrate’s Coart John Doyle was charged with being unlawfully in possession oi opium for smoking, and also with concealing opium with a view to evade the prohibition against the importation of opium. The police entrapped Doyle, who was arrested in a right-of-way where he bad taken a tin of opium to sell to the informer. The latter gave a signal by striking la match, and a detective and a constable appeared and arrested Doyle. Subsequently the police discovered five tins of opium in the backyard of Doyle’s house. A fine of £IOO and costs was inflicted for concealing opium, and a conviction was entered on the other obarge. Doyle, who had * previously boon fined £IOO, was unable to pay, and went to gaol.
