The figures in parenthesis show the aggregates at the finish of the Nelson match : Shaw, Ohinomuri (265) ... 599 Milboy, Nelson (269) ... 298 Dewar, Ofiinarn (266) ... 295 Wilkie, Upper' Hnit (263)... 295 . Papps, Nelson (258) ’... 292 Pearson (259) .... , ... 291 At the start of the shooting at 500yds in the -Nelson matoh on Saturday morning the weather was very fine, and even the .most fastidious shooters could not complain. Firing opened just before 8 with 500yds of the Nelson match, and the men quickly got on to the bull’s-eye, and possibles came quickly, while all buts oame along with a great rattle, and were so common as to be thought -little of by shooting men. At this range Waddington, of the Imperial Biflea, Christchurch, a lad of 17, put up 31. Just at the finish of the first range a wind sprang up from the south-west, baffling the . marksmen and rednoing the value of the shooting. At i one period a whirlwind enveloped tho whole range. At 11.30 it veered round to i the northward, and continued thus until after dinner, when it again took a southerly j turn. Shooters were at a loss to kuow how to deal with the vaooillating element. ; Windage allowances were made from dead on to several degrees right and left. The £ result was that the scoring was indifferent Dn the whole throughout the remainder of ( tho day. Young Waddington, who scored an all but at 33, broke; up at 600 yards, but succeeded in making tpp score (33) at 700 yards, a really splendid performance. There was one possible' at the last range, when one mau, who at the previous ranges bad put on several bulls, ended by a duck. The top soorsr of the match was Bankell, j of Petone, with 96 out of a possible 105, g followed by A. McKenzie (Oatnaru), G. W. a , Venue! (Tewharn) and Sergeant Bishop s( (Hastings) with 95 eaoh. The Canterbury sj match, 200, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots, a was-started at 600 yards, which range was ,y, completed before the close of the day’s shooting, being somewhat better, as the g, wind had moderated.
The shooting at the 500yds in the Nelson Match resulted in the following securing the possible (35) :—Bidweir (Kaiwaiwai), Andrews (Christchurch), McDonald (Dunedin), Bunting (Palmerston North), Irvine {Wairoa), Domegan (Gore), Sandford (Christchurch), Marshall (Pabiatua), and Cornes (Ohinomuri). Twenty-four competitors registered 34, and_B3’s were so plentiful as to be out of regard. At the 600yds the men who had scored pos-. sibles at the 500yds fared badly; Irvine secured only 21, Bunting 24, Domegan 15, Comes and Bidwell 27, Sandford, Marshall, and Andrews 30 each. , A. Ballinger scored 33, and Cbing put up only 27. The highest score at the range was 34, which figare was reached by Franklin (Weber), Hale (Petone), arid Hall (Tuamarina). There were several 33’s, but the'majority of the competitors were far below that score. The* final stage of .the match (700yds} was ' entered upon after dinner. The wind was very variable, and necessh tated constant variations of windage. A§ afaons 3 o’clock it moderated’ and waf
steadier, but the only remarkable perform* anoe was that of Bugler WaddiogtonS already mentioned, who made the highesin Bcore at the range (33), and he was heartily applauded. HU aggregate was 56, which put him into* the tyro prize list. The match was won by Rifleman Rondell (Peitono) with un aggregate oi 96, 33 at 500, 31 at 600, and 32 at 700. - The runner-up was Rifleman G. W. Vonnol (To Wfaaru) 95, the position of seniority being decided by a " count back.” H>» Hawthorne (Karori), who won the land match, finished with 87, andjfaergt, Shaw, runner up in: the- samejunatch, scored 89.
