A short time ago the Ohristohuroh £?f counoil of the League of wrote '.f to the Minister for Justice in reference .to the increase in tho number of bicycle thefts, and suggested that heavier penalties' should .be imposed, and the attention police drawn to the' matter. At the meet* ing of the council here on Wednesday night a letter was read from the Commissioner of Police, stating that the polioe were not at all neglectful. Of 219 bioyoles reported stolen.last year; he said 199 were recovered througli.the action of the polioe. At the present timfe 21 unclaimed bicycles were in the possession of the Christchurch police.
