The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, MARCH 6, 1905. THE WAR.
.To-flay/s news from the scat o£ war .will revive the intense interest in the campaign. The Russians, we learn, are beibg forced hack along the whole line of defence, and the numerical superiority; of the Japanese xsi being made manifest at all points. All the indications are .that the Russians are in for another severe handling by, the Japanese. ■At one period deray was all in favor of Russia. But things are so turning out that Japan stands to reap ibe benefit by, either haste or leisure. ' The internal situation in Russia completely alters the condition of affairs, and must greatly, dishearten the Russian soldiers. A lew sharp reverses now will have a very, serious effect on the morale of the 'Russian Army. In the past lying reports 'disseminated from, official Russian- sources have served to ■ give things dv satisfactory, appearance from the Russian ppint of viewje but s|ucb pretences can be maintained no longer. The “ greatest battle in the history of the world ” is now being entered upon, and it can hardly end otherwise than in favor of' the Japanese, They have superiority in • numbers, and in the fighting capacity. of the men ,- it will largely be a case of victorious veterans meeting a disheartened foe composed , of many elements. A few days ago Russia denied having any, thought of discussing terms of peace. Next week will probably havp a different story; to record.
