News from New Hebrides states that an encounter has occurred at Mallicollo between the natives and the crew of the French steamer Ne Oblie. Captain Piret found the natives in possession of a whaleboat Btolon from a French trader. He took charge of the boat. Natives hiding in a thicket opened fire on the steamer. Captain Piret replied from two guns aboard the vessel. After 200 shots had been exchanged the natives retreated. French reports state that several Frenoh missionaries express fear of a general massaoro of Europeans, and ask for the protection of a war ship.
