Melbourne, last night. The population of the Commonwealth at the end of laßt year was 3,985,863. The Orient Company’s manager denies that the company offered to carry the mails for ,£120,000. Though the Postmaster General refuses to give information it is understood he has received a tender for a mail service to alternate wjth the P. and O. service. It is also reported that a local syndicate intends to tender.
