During the evening the visiting team and their friends were entertained at a smoke concert at the Masonic Hotel, the skipper of the Opotiki team, Mr 'W. A. Carter, beiDg in the chair. The chairman, in proposing the toast of “ Our Guests,” expressed the hope that this was but the thin end of the wedge to more frequent communication between the two distriots, and in his reply, Mr Beed, the Motu captain, strongly endorsed the chairman’s words. He considered the intorests of the two districts as Jregards better communication wore mutual, and that undoubtedly as soon as the new road was made there would be considerable traffic between Motu and Opotiki. The new road would bring their settlement within a comparatively short distance of Opotiki, and it was only natural they should utilise the shortest road to an outlet. A number of songs and reoita&ions were given during the ovening, which terminated with the singing of “ Auld Land Syne ” by all present.
