A‘ considerable amount of satisfaction was manifested in the native settlement here when it became known that a local lad named Hijni (Tomati had succeeded in carrying off .one of the Mcßean scholarships competed for in December last.' The scholarships are open to All native schools in the 'colony, and worth £os per annum, tenable for two years, Which has enabled the youth To further prosecute his studies; at Te Aute College, where he is now at work. It is an achievement of no mean order, and Hioni carries with him the best ■wishes of the residents here for his Welfare and success in his future scholastic career. A word of praise is also due to the teacher, Mr W. Fraser, for the very, able manner m iwhioh he has -developed, the lad’s unUiQUbteU natural ability. Horn has (been under Mr Fraser’s tuition for :■ .the lasi, two yeans.
