MOTU NOTES

jjj (From Our- Own Correspondent.); I ; ■; .. February 13. I i What eventually may turn ont a big I jjhiDg for the Motu was an important dis- I ’covery made by Mr C. Hansen, and his j hon, Mr Fred Hansen, whilst obtaining tome gravel from the Motu river last ■ "’ednesday. A member of small pieces of I Aarontly pure gold were found among shingle, together with a quantity of •good fresh-looking quartz. It has long '.been argued that tho Motu river contains • 'mid. A few prospectors have been'at I work in previous years but nothing was » found with tho exception of samples of I > suspicious looking quartz. Tho appear- I auce of the country round about Motu certainly is that tho formation appears to be gOod. I might state that a test of the mineral found will be obtained by Mr Hansen as a guide to further developments. The cricket team to represent Motu at Opotiki on Taesday left here yesterday j morning, accompanied by a number of | supporters. -' There were several ladies among tbe party. Also a number of Giaboruites passed through this 1 morning to the Show. The' Opotiki Show this year is attracting much attention from Motu j The election of two members for the Gisborne Harbor Board district took place bore to-day. Little interest was seemingly taken in the proceedings. , A special, general .meeting of the Motu Bifls Olub will bo held in the school on Monday, February 20th. A full master . .of members is requested. I At tbe next mooting of the Cook County *' Council I suppose the engineer will present his report as regards the deviations I on the Karaka-Motu road. It is a well- I known fact that the work will have to be | carried out by special loao. From what I can glean from settlers I am inclined to I think that the special loan will not be carried, for this reason—the Motu river is the boundary between the County Council and I < Opotiki County Connell, and of course J " those on Opotiki side will refuse to be j rated for work carried out by the Cook County. Now the settlers on this side of I the river or those within the jurisdiction I of the Cook .County look at it in this way : I Those settlers over the river are haviDg a I road slowly formed towards Opotiki, but I in the meantime, and, in fact, always, the / Karaka-Motu road will be their principal yr means of access, and why should they be > burdened by a heavy rate in order to be a convenience for them ?. Then again the Opotiki County ratepayers say : wo will have a road of our own to support later op. Personally, I am convinced that it I will be a number of years before they will '- have to bear the cost. They should come V forward and help the few settlers who are willing to advance the interest of the disjSio'&iJn faot the Karaka-Motu road is Iffteirioud, and it is the road that they dorxVSHmmediate benefit from—l refer to the settlers in the Uratawa-east survey diatrict.and others'.who hold land in the immediate vicinity and reap the benefit of the road. In all there are some fourteen or fifteen settlers who could help the work • forward by petitioning to the Opotiki County Couocil. Another week or so will most likely see a greater pait of the grass seeding operations completed. v It has been heard of by many but few have seen a calf born with its mother’s ea mark, but auoh has been the case at Motur \ ’’The cow and calf are the property of Mr. W- Fisher.
