Wellington, last nigh A deputation from the Trades and Labor Council waited upon tha Pro: Acs lasi night to enquire why the Shopsacd Offices Act was nob being enforced. iThs deputation complained of the delay irr the bearing of a test case by tho Appeal Court and alleged that shop assistants were beinp worked longer hours than allowed by tin Act. Mr Seddon, in reply, said the eminent was not responsible for me delay as it had not the fixing of the Appea Court dates. Until the test case wa decided it was no use enforcing section, of the Act. All other sections of ‘ the Ac except those governed by she test cas were being enforced. The hours of labo: however, were not in question, and exisj ing. legislation dealt with it. ir-thorCiw was being violated it was the duty o! inspectors to take action. He expressed himself in favor of amending legislation exempting from early closing; within reasonable limits fruiterers, confectioners',and the like, with proper restrictions to see that the employees in those businesses were not overworked.
