Per Press 'Association^ Auckland, last night. Complete official returns of transactions in bankruptcy in the northern district as compiled by the official Assignee show that the total number of bankruptcies m the districts under his jurisdiction during thq year 1904 was 85, of which Auokland contributed 41, Stratford 18 Hawera 13 Now. Plymouth 11, and Gisborne 2. Por the previous year the total was 54, Auckland being responsible for 31, New Plymouth 9, Hawera 6, Stratford 3, and Gisborne 5. The following are the principal returns compiled for 1904: Assets as shown by statements Sled, 1,51,018; assetsrealised, 1,21,444; liabilities a 3 proved, L,85,4d5 ; amounts paid in dividends, Xi 10,257. 3Jhe valuation list for the city of Auckland for the current year, .which has been submitted to the Council, shows an increase in the total assessments of L18,09d, as compared with last year, the respective amounts being 1,406,688 > and 1.424,781. The Committoe suggest as a remedy for the I present unsatisiactory state of affairs the imposition of a duty on foreign fruits, oranges and bananas of Id per lb, pineapples Id, and coffee 2d per lb, also a duty on oocoanuts and limejuice.
